Text Appearing Before Image:
in the canvas atBudapest. This precious drawing, the property of the Vienna Museum, is ona sheet covered with a variety of figures, all rapidly and freelysketched, and raises another interesting point. Besides a number ofgroups which the painter either never used, or used in pictures nowlost, the sheet contains the germ of the St. Joseph at work in thelittle picture of the Madonna delta Cesta. The sketch confirms, to acertain extent, the almost unanimous opinion of critics that this waspainted at about the same date as the Madonna del Latte. If we take A A 2 i8o ANTONIO DA CORREGGIO the Budapest example for purposes of comparison, we shall find thathere and in the National Gallery picture the types of Virgin andChild, the play of the drapery, which begins to be treated moresquarely, the gradations of tone, and the management of the light, arepractically identical. The masters pictorial faculty displays itself mostcharacteristically in the very individual sentiment, design, and colour.
Text Appearing After Image:
MADONNA AND CHILD WITH SAINTS. Sketch by Correggio. In the Vienna Museum. The Madonna, seated with her Child upon her lap, and St. Joseph, planing a piece of wood, appear in a beautiful setting of trees andantique ruins. The Virgin, whose work-basket and other feminineimplements lie at her feet, endeavours to draw on the Infants littledress. She has put one arm through a sleeve, but the Child strugglesvigorously under the maternal hands, disarranging his shirt. Marysmiles softly, as if admonishing the Babe with a gentle My son, letme dress thee ! Madonna del la Cesta. (NATIONAL GALLRRY, LONDON.)
