Israelshas the same aim constantly in view. What-ever the subject of interest in his pictures maybe, it is the mystery of the lighting of hiscottage interiors that is ever before him. WithWeissenbruch it is always the light in the skiesthat attracts him, as it illuminates the clouds,or shines down on the quiet sea, or strikes thewhite-edged waves as they are lifted into theair and driven before the gale. They are all impressionists in the true senseof the word, giving the impressions made uponthem by the scenes they paint. They do notattempt to tell any stories in their pictures.Their subjects are the simplest and of commonoccurrence, belonging to the ordinary life aboutthem. Even the cottage interiors with theirinmates have nothing of the anecdotal qualityin them. Whether they paint out-door orin-door life, their pictures are just the recordsof what the artists saw as they watched thepeasants engaged at work in their every-daypursuits, and as they shared in their happinessor sorrow.

MODERN DUTCH ART 123 In addition to their works in oil, these artistsdiscovered a new method of painting in water-colours. They revived this branch of art bythe beautiful and rich effects they producedthrough the novel treatment of their materials.The paper is allowed to get saturated withcolours, and it requires great knowledge ofthe process and skill in handling to use thismethod to advantage. The aim is to give moreof the depth and colour of oil painting, withoutlosing the softness and richness of water-colours, and the use of body colour is allowedwhere necessary. The result has been a newmanner of painting, and all these artists havebeen very successful in its use, and have pro-duced brilliant pictures, which have much ofthe strength of oil painting, yet preserve thecharm and the delicacy of the slighter medium,and have a peculiar quality and beauty of theirown. Thus these painters of Holland have beenalways seriously and earnestly at work, yet veryhappy in the enjoyment of life
