Title
"Franz I Stephan, Holy Roman Emperor", important miniature!!, 1750/60
Description

On view is a very rare representation of Maria Theresia's consort, Kaiser (Emperor) of the Holy Roman Empire, Fraz I Stephan (CLICK HERE and HERE). The emperor is shown with Viennese Karlskirche (CLICK HERE) in the background. This miniature portrait is a very important work of Prussian Court miniaturist Anton Friedrich Koenig. It was acquired on February 27, 2016 at the sale of French auction house "Hiret & Nugues" (Laval, department Mayenne) as one in a pair of identically sized and framed miniatures. The second miniature (unavailable for us to purchase) was also an authentic work of A. F. Koenig; it was one of his numerous portraits of the Prussian King Friedrich II (The Great; see our image nr.9). This work is a counterpart of our web #41152).

The well-known German miniaturist Anton Friedrich Koenig (1722 Berlin - 1787 ibidem) was a pupil of C.L.Blesendorf and A.Pesne and from 1767 worked as royal portrait miniature painter in Berlin, being the most fruitful North German miniaturist of his time. He is supposed to have made several thousands of miniatures alone of Friedrich the Great!
