LANERCOST PRIORY, Situated upon the north fide of the river Irthing, in the County ofCumberland, was founded, as appears by an infcription in the Church,by Robert de Vallibus or Vaux, Lord of Gilfland or Gilefland, in theyear of our Lord 1116, and dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, 53 yearsafter, in the fixteenth year of the reign of Henry II. by Bernard, fecondBifhop of Carlifle. It is faid this Monaftery was built in expiation of amurder that the Founder had committed on one Giles Bueth, a defcendantof the Saxon owner of Gilfland. This Giles Bueth was a competitor withWilliam Mefchines, the Norman grantee, for the pofleflion of this Barony;after whofe death Henry II. gave it to Robert de Vallibus, who to fecurehis pofleflion of it, is faid to have killed Giles Bueth in a moil perfidiousmanner.
