ANTIQUE VIEWS OF BOHTOX. 261 WASHINGTON FXM, CAMBRIDGE. On the meeting of the Second Continental Congress in Philadel-phia, May 10th, 1775, its most important duty was to appoint acommander-in-chief of the patriot forces. It was a task of greatdelicacy and difficulty. John Adams of Boston moved that thearmy then besieging Boston should be adopted by Congress as aContinental army, and he would propose for commander-in-chiefof same a gentleman of Virginia who was there present. His re-marks were so pointed that all present percieved them to apply toColonel Washington, who, upon hearing this reference to himself,retired from his seat and withdrew, ^hen the ballot was takenit was found that Colonel Washington was unanimously elected.Before the election it had been voted to pay the General five hun-dred dollars a month for his expenses.
