[edit]DescriptionAnthopleura xanthogrammica (giant green anemone) (tidal pool at Yaquina Head, Oregon, USA) 5.jpg |
English: Anthopleura xanthogrammica (Brandt, 1835) - giant green anemone in a tidal pool in Oregon, USA.
Sea anemones are relatives of corals and jellyfish. They are basically bags with tentacles. The tentacles of sea anemones have stinging cells (nematocysts) that paralyze or kill prey, which are then drawn toward the mouth at the center of the tentacle cluster. Giant green anemones occur along most of the eastern coastlines of the North Pacific Ocean. This specimen is in a tidal pool along a rocky shoreline at Yaquina Head, Oregon. The tidal pools in the area are developed in the Ginkgo Basalt, which is one of many lava flows in the Miocene-aged Columbia River Flood Basalt. The black clasts in this tidal pool have been eroded from the Ginkgo Basalt. Anemones in tidal pools retract their tentacles at low tide to prevent desiccation (drying out) and tissue damage from solar radiation. This individual is partially retracted. The sea anemone's column - the tissue surrounding & below the tentacle ring - has scattered adhering sediments. The grains are mostly angular fragments from mollusc shells. The shell debris also helps prevent desiccation and radiation damage to tissues - this is a natural sunscreen. Classification: Animalia, Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Actiniaria, Actiniidae Locality: tidal pool on the southern side of Yaquina Head, coastal Oregon, USA See info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthopleura_xanthogrammica and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_anemone |
