Notes | Van Dyck here depicted Orazio Gentilischi whom he likely made acquaintance with in London or if not before, while in Italy. The drawing is sensitively executed in black chalk with minimal use of wash and brown ink, and has an intimate yet restrained character. This may be somewhat at odds with Gentileschi’s irascible character but displays a debt to Italian prototypes such as those by Titian. The outlines were incised by Vosterman for transfer to the copperplate (for an impression in the BM, see inv. no. 1865,0509.886) [1] | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
