THE artistic effect of landscape pictures suffers considerably tromthe absence of clouds or a natural-looking sky. At recent exhi-bitions visited by us, we have noted that in nearly every case the skyof the picture was represented by a white space, which entirely robbedthe picture of any claim to a true representation of the subject photo-graphed or anything more than a poor attempt at the production ofthe artistic. It is unnecessary to say that a purely white sky is neverpresent. There is either a blue expanse above our heads or the sky isdotted with clouds, or, should it be entirely overcast, there is sufficientlight and shade to give relief from the monotony of the white sheet. Inno case, whatever, is there an absolutely white sky. Therefore, in everycase where such a clear sheet of paper is
