While there is no doubt of the desirability of a prism, much of theprejudice against the mirror is due to a lack of knowledge on thesubject. 26 The principal objection to an unvarnished mirror is. its liability totarnish, and. unless varnished in the most careful manner, the sharpnesswill be seriously interfered with. A mirror protected with varnish, and placed in the camera (in aprojecting box), which is a far more desirable position than before thelens, should last a year or two.
