AMONG THE DAISIES.Photograph and Half-Tone by H. Laney. 4i4 has been no development of an image, is dissolved, would be impossible. I hold thetheory that it is the nascent bromine that tans the gelatine. If a plain gelatine plate is soaked in a solution of pyro and ammonia for severalhours, and then put in hot water, it will melt readily, proving that, although sub-jected to the action of oxidized pyro, no tanning action has taken place. I know-that old notions are hard to get rid of, as is the so-called rising and setting of thesun. which is only illusive. Things are not what they seem, and this tanning action, though appearing to be produced by pyrogallic action, is not due to it. Now, as to the development of the image, what is the constitution of the imagein the plate? It has been said that the undeveloped image in the plate consists ofsilver sub-bromide ; but silver sub-bromide has never yet been proved to be present, and there is no evidence that silver sub-bromide has been made,
