Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Statue of Herakles. Found in 1992 in front of the stage of the Perge theatre. Roman, end of second century AD. 2,8 m. high. Herakles was the son of Zeus and Alcmene. He killed his own three children in a fit of madness sent by Hera, a wrong which he redressed by performing twelve labours. Those labours can be seen on a couple of sarcophagi in the museum, they were amongst the most popular themes in art. The statue was broken in many pieces, several missing. The left hand holds a broken arrow, over that arm a lion’s skin is thrown, below it the club he used as a weapon on many occasions and a bull’s head. A quiver containing arrows is visible at the other side, where a gazelle raises its head next to the support. The statue was placed on the second floor of the stage building together with the large statues of Dionysos, Marsyas and Hermes. Source: Sculptures of the Museum in Antalya p. 122
