[edit]DescriptionAnt Mutualism (4345503898).jpg |
Ant (ID ?) Merida, Yucatan, Mexico A large hornet made me look at some flowers, which I observed and realized that there were many creatures around it, including some parasites, a jumping spider, and these ants. I noticed that there were many of this ants but in different stems, and they were just there, standing, not doing much. Then I realized that they were feeding on the extraforal nectar of the plant. This is a technique that some plants use, in which they excrude some nectar from some pores that they have on the stem, and its supposedly so delicious, that the ant will feed on it and stay there. This way, the ant is fed and the plant is protected from parasites. This plants was an Ipomoea carnea. I am still trying to ID the ant. |
