Summary
[edit]DescriptionAnsbach Army Lodge named for fallen aviator (8188128862).jpg | Ansbach Army Lodge on Urlas Kaserne in Katterbach, Germany, has been renamed for Capt. John Randall Brainard III, an aviator killed in Afghanistan earlier this year. The 12th Combat Aviation Brigade dedicated the facility at a ceremony Nov. 9. A native of Maine, Brainard’s first duty station was in Illesheim, Germany, where he served as a platoon leader for B Company, 3-159th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 12th CAB. In March, he was selected as the brigade adjutant and deployed two months later for Operation Enduring Freedom. Along with his pilot, Chief Warrant Officer 5 John Castle Pratt, he was killed in action May 28 when their AH-64D Longbow Apache helicopter was shot down near Kabul. Ansbach Army Lodge was a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District project. Awarded in 2008, it was turned over to U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach during a ribbon-cutting ceremony last December.
