Title
Ansate brooch of Early-Medieval date
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy brooch, probably an ansate brooch of Early-Medieval date. The bow and one terminal survive, the opposite terminal and pin now missing due to old breaks. The bow is D-shaped in section with flat back and rounded front face, and relatively steelpy curved in profile. At one end is an integral terminal. This is trefoil in form, decorated on its front face with a single ring and dot motif at the centre of each lobe or foil. On the back face of the terminal is an integrally cast but incomplete pin lug that is semi-circular in form with a single circular aperture, missing its outer edge due to old breaks. The entire object has worn surfaces and a corroded dark green patina. It measures 29.67mm in length, 15.40mm in width at terminal, 5.29mm in width at bow, 3.09mm in thickness at bow, and 3.74g in weight.

This is an incomplete brooch of possible Early-Medieval date. It finds parallels in Ansate brooches of Middle Anglo-Saxon date, with parallels possibly noted in Thorle's Group VIII A brooches (Thorle, 2001: fig. 38). This suggests a possible date range in the 8th-9th centuries AD for the current example, if not slightly later.
