Title |
ansate brooch |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy Middle Saxon ansate (or caterpillar) brooch. It is complete except for the edge of one terminal. The brooch is narrow and rectangular, having a central arched bow with a pair of moulded ribs in the middle. The two end terminals are separated from the arch by another rib apiece, and there is a final rib or collar at the terminals, one of which is incomplete due to old breaks. The brooch is flat-backed, and there is no trace of decoration on the front face. On the underside there are the remains of a pin lug behind one terminal, and a small patch of corrosion on the other would indicate the position of catchplate of some kind, now missing. The brooch measures 43.06mm in length and 7.85mm in width across the bow. It is 4.93mm in thickness at the arch, reducing to 3.63mm along the arms. The pin lug consists of two square protrusions with rounded outer edges, both perforated to take a narow pin which is still in situ though corroded. The brooch pin would have attached to this hinge. The brooch weighs 9.28g. |
