| Description | I found this fly waving its beautiful wings in the garden (Ipswich, VC25 East Suffolk, TM166450) on 22 July 2015 and caught it in a plastic bag. Tony Irwin has confirmed the ID and said that these flies are attracted to White Spirit. As it happens I have a large tub of paint drying out near to where I found the fly, so maybe that is what attracted it. Its usual host is Hawthorne where it lays its eggs in the berries. I found at least one site that gave the fly the common name of "Spectacled Berry Fly" which I think is a great name which I guess comes from the distinctive wing pattern. I released the fly afterwards. |
