Summary
[edit]DescriptionAnnulohypoxylon multiforme - geograph.org.uk - 1175616.jpg |
English: Birch Woodwart (Hypoxylon multiforme). There is a stand of birch trees at this location, where the soil is generally rather wet and acidic. The fruiting bodies of Beech Woodwart, shown here growing on a birch stump, are often elongated around the girth of the tree (as was the case here). The fruiting bodies in this photograph are up to 15 mm wide, with a warty surface (beneath the surface bumps are spore-producing chambers called perithecia – see the Beech Woodwart link below).
Among the Woodwart species that are illustrated on Geograph, Beech Woodwart – 1066796 – and Hazel Woodwart – 1080101 – are both fairly common; however, Birch Woodwart, shown here, occurs only infrequently. As mentioned above, it is growing here on a stump; given that this species grows on dead wood, it is not surprising that I was unable to locate any other specimens on the surrounding (living) trees. |
