Title
Annular buckle
Description
English: A Medieval copper-alloy annular buckle with cast copper-alloy pin, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1450. The frame is circular in plan, and oval in cross-section, with no constriction for the pin. The frame is undecorated. The pin is cast, with a rounded point and a sub-circular cross section. At the attachment end is a cast, rearward facing hook, with the juncture between the two deliniated by a transverse collar, moulded in relief. File marks are present on the sides of the pin.

The frame is is 4.3mm at it widest point and 3.6mm at its narrowest. It is 2.6 to 2.8mm thick and it has an external diameter of 34.0mm and an internal diameter of 26.6mm. The pin is 38.6mm long from the head of the loop to the tip, and 3.8mm in cross-sectional diameter at the thickest point of the shaft. The gap in the loop is 2.0mm. The buckle as a whole weighs 9.81g

Egan and Pritchard (1991: 57) suggest that annular rings with pins that do not have a pin constriction on the frame should be considered buckles rather than brooches. The publish a number of examples excavated from medieval contexts in London with cast pins with ridges/castings at the juncture of the attachment end (nos. 33-37), with the type in general dating to 1200 to 1450 AD. See SOM-39B591,SOM-BBDDB7 and SOM-249044 on this database for similar examples.
