Title
annular buckle
Description
English: Cast copper alloy double-looped annular buckle, circular in plan and plano-convex in profile. The upper face of the buckle is decorated with recessed rectangles at oblique angles, alternating with raised panels, creating an alternating '[' shape. This creates an effect described by Margeson (1993, 28; ref.159), discussing a parallel, as 'castellated'. The central strap bar divides the annular frame into two D-shaped loops and is missing its pin. The bar is trapezoidal in section with the narrower upper face flush with the frame, and measures 33 mm long, 4 mm wide and 4 mm thick. The buckle has a dark green patina over the entire surface and is in stable condition. There are traces of black lacquering at the edge of the frame, but the buckle has been cleaned and lacquered again, so it is not clear id this would have covered the original surface of the buckle.

Whitehead (1996) illustrates a very similar annular buckle on page 46, No.269, which is dated from the 1400-1500.

Margeson (1993) illustrates a very similar annular buckle on page 29, Fig.15, No.159, which is dated from 1400-1600.
