Title
Annular buckle
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy Medieval annular buckle and pin, c. mid 13th-c. mid 15th centuries AD. The annular buckle frame has two slightly thinner areas opposite from one another that seem to correspond to where the pin and belt would have rubbed. The pin is made of a thick sub-triangular cast piece of tapering metal, with the thicker end loosely curled around the frame and the flat narrow end used for securing the buckle to a belt strap. The pin is decorated on the outer surface of its base with a transverse moulded ridge. There is no further decoration. The buckle frame measures 42.83 mm in diameter, ranging from 3.48 mm to 4.30 mm thick; the pin measures 47.15 mm long, 6.78 mm wide at base, 3.45 mm wide at point and 2.06 mm thick. The whole buckles weighs 14.04 grams.

Both Egan and Pritchard (1991, Fig. 11) and Whitehead (2003, 16) date this type of buckle to c. 1250-1450 AD. Cf. Whitehead 2003, No. 35.
