t gather men to ourhomes in the heat of summer and cold of winter when we are unableto itinerate and train them for their work. Most of the converts are in limited circumstances, so that themost we can ask of them is to give their time without compensation.And we pay their traveling expenses and boarding while they study.I have such a class of fourteen with me now, and have had for twomonths. Some of them give promise of great usefulness. I had a similar class during the summer. The expense of the class will not beless than one hundred dollars. I presume Dr. Nevius has spent asmuch, if not more, in a similar way during the year. There is no ap-propriation for this work, nor any contingent fee from which we candraw. Who will come forward and supply the means for this interestingand needful work ? The local work at Chefou has enjoyed a fair degree of prosperity.Eleven persons have been received into the church and chapel;preaching has been kept up daily on a main street in the city. The

MISSIONS IN CHINA. 65 city proper, known as Yentai, is the resort of people from the provinceand of sailors from the junks which swarm in the harbor. Many ofthese as well as the native soldiers of the local garrison, have fre-quented the street chapel and heard the truth. A good account is given of the boys school under the care of Mr.Corbett. The number is not large in attendance, but the industry ofthe pupils is worthy of all commendation. As there are a score ofapplications for each vacant place, only the diligent are retained.These rise at dawn and begin their earnest work. The facility withwhich the brighter boys of China memorize their lessons and the re-tentiveness which enables them to bear fair examinations on the studiesof two and even three years past, are worthy of note. The schools under the care of Mrs. Nevius have been blessed withpeculiar spiritual influence.
