which is plainly in view. On theeastern side of the exposure the large mass of talus conceals nearlyeverything. The small portion of the contact between the shale andthe overlying clay was laid bare by e\< a\ at ing. At the top of the claythere is a weed covered bench which looks as if formed by a landslide;but a little examination of the composition, structure, and relativeposition of various parts of the section here exposed shows that thiscan not be so. The bench, instead of being produced by a landslide,is due to the presence of springs. The water, w hich readily percolatesthe overlying beds of sand, reaches the impervious clay, w hich drainsit to the surface, where it washes away the sand to produce the bench. The great abundance of shells, among which Dr. Dall recognizedMon in macroschisma Desh., Macoma nasuia Oonr., Saxidomus arat\uGld., Tapes staminea (our., ZirphcBa crispata I.., and Purpura crispataMartvn., all of w hich are living forms, shows not onlv that at least the

PLEISTOCENE. 483 basal portion of the mass is of marine origin, but that it is of Pleisto-cene age. In the upper part of the clay that contains shells a cone wasfound like the cones at the base of the bluff at Newport. Both expo-sures occur in the same bluff one-half mile apart, and this common fossilserves to connect them still more closely. From the heights, near the schoolhouse at Newport, looking south-east across the bay, Hinton Point is in fair view. It is well stratifiedfrom base to summit. In the upper three-fourths of the bluff, accordingto Professor Condon, who has examined the locality, the deposits aresandy, corresponding to those exposed at Newport, but beneath themthe horizontal strata are argillaceous. The bottom of the clay is notexposed. It lies below the bottom of the bay. Between the sand andclay water escapes, as at the locality just noted, one-half mile south-west of Newport. Professor Condon has collected a large number offossils from the clay bed at Hinton Point
