t is built of Portland concrete, withwalls about 12 inches in thickness. Passing under the branch of theBoston & Albany Railroad the masonry was increased to about 16inches in thickness and reinforced with twisted steel. Passing underVillage Brook the section was widened to 8 feet and the arch de-pressed so that the sewer had a height of 5 feet and 6 inches. Thewalls of the sewer were increased to 16 inches in thickness and thesection reinforced with twisted steel. For a length of about 100 feet, in Brington Road, the local 8-inchsewer was relaid on the side of the Metropolitan Sewer. The ma-sonry was completed on this contract and trenches backfilled late inDecember. On account of the severe winter conditions, repairs tosurfaces of streets and in private lands will be made in the spring. A second contract, for construction of part of this section, wasmade with James Driscoll & Son, on May 21, 1907, for a length of1,700 feet, in Gorham Avenue, Greenongh and Washington streets,

No. 57.) AND SEWERAGE BOARD. 157 from Davis Avenue to Park Street. Work on this contract wasbegun June 4, 1907, at Davis Avenue. The excavation had anaverage depth of 22 feet, with a maximum of 26 feet in GreenoughStreet. For a length of about 400 feet in Greenough Street the ex-cavation was in hard, compact gravel and clay. On the remainderof the contract the excavation was in clean sand and gravel of suchcharacter that it was used in the masonry of the sewer. But verylittle water was found anywhere in the section; such as was foundwas handled in a well at Davis Avenue, and lifted by a 4-inch cen-trifugal pump, electrically operated, the same as used by T. J.OConnell, before noted. The excavation throughout practically thewhole contract was carried out by bucket excavators. The excava-tion was completed about December 1. For a length of 30 feet nearthe corner of Greenough Street and Gorham Avenue, passing an elmtree of great size, the excavation was in tunnel. The sewer for the 1,700
