hel-sea and the other in Maiden, not only for the purpose of ascertainingthe direction and intensity of the electric currents upon the pipelines, but also for controlling the flow of electricity. At various points along the large water mains the pipes havebeen uncovered in order to ascertain the extent of the permanentinjury which has been produced by electricity. The investigationsshow that the pitting and disintegration of the pipes from the elec-trical action has reached a serious extent, and the disintegratingprocess is continuing even in places where insulating joints andother devices have been applied for the purpose of arresting orovercoming the injury which is caused by the underground electriccurrents. Measures will be taken not only for ascertaining the amount ofthe damage which has been caused, but also in order to determinethe responsibility for the injury which arises from electrolysis,while all means which promise success will be adopted for the pro-tection of the pipes.

No. 57.) AND SEWERAGE BOARD. 75 X. LEGISLATIVE ACTS OF THE YEAR 1907. The Legislature of the year 1907 appropriated (chapter 201) asum not exceeding $143,000 for the cost of maintenance and opera-tion of the North Metropolitan Sewerage System, and (chapter 200)a sum not exceeding $105,000 for the cost of maintenance and op-eration of the South Metropolitan Sewerage System. It was provided by chapter 165 that annual appropriations shouldthereafter be made for the maintenance and operation of the Metro-politan Water System, and that balances remaining on account ofassessments in any one year should be taken into account in makingthe assessments of the succeeding year. It is provided by chapter 238 that all sums of money paid bya city or town not belonging to the Metropolitan Water District, orby a water company in any such city or town, for water furnishedto it by the Board, shall hereafter be applied to the MetropolitanWater Loan Sinking Fund, instead of being distributed to the cities
