HIGH-LEVEL SEWER —Screen Chamber and Sand Catcher on Nut Islandin Construction —Views from Opposite Ends. No. 57.) AND SEWERAGE BOARD. 191 was laid a boulder-concrete masonry foundation to support theconnecting sewer from Nut Island to Quincy Great Hill. Thisfoundation and embankment were superloaded during the winter of1902-1903, and settlements were recorded. It was found that ap-preciable settlements in the subfoundation extended over a lengthof 675 feet, between Station 4-f-0 and Station 10-J-75, the maximumbeing about 2 feet. These had practically ceased before the workof building the connecting sewer in the embankment was attemptedduring the present year, and in the construction of the sewer, suffi-cient additional boulder-concrete was placed on the subfoundationto restore it to its original elevation. The sewer is of the horseshoe type, having a concrete invert linedwith 8 inches of brickwork, and a brick arch of a minimum thick-ness of 12 inches. Extending northerly from t
