ulting from the de-struction of buildings has been removed from the former site of theWest Boylston Manufacturing Companys property at Oakdale, andeither burned or placed in highway embankments ; the old canal atOakdale has been refilled. An important work was the final clean-ing of the reservoir bottom on the area to be flooded up to elevation330 ; the wooden bridges, ties, telegraph and telephone poles alongthe line of the Central Massachusetts Railroad in the district to beflooded were removed ; the ties, telegraph and telephone poles wereburned or sold for firewood, and the bridge lumber was eitherburned or hauled to a point above the flow line of the reservoir, andstored ; the soil on the embankments of the railroad was cast to thefoot of the slopes and covered with earth from the embankments toa depth of about 1 foot; all weeds and grass were mowed, and,together with the roots, etc., were burned over an area of 1,350acres. Perennials have been pulled or grubbed on the areas in thebasin from which the soil has been removed, and posts and guardrails on abandoned roads have been removed, over 100 stone monu-ments having been recut from old stone posts thus removed, andmuch other minor work has been done. The maximum force employed was 101 men and 12 horses, forthe week ending October 17. In addition to the engineering work connected with the estimatesand inspection of the removal of soil, the following work has beendone : — For the guidance of the inspectors, the organic matter in 467samples of soil has been determined.
