ar. The extension to Belmont requires the building of 6,367 feet ofsewer, and the work has proceeded so far towards completion thatit is expected that the sewer will be finished at an early date. Thesewer is designed also to provide for the sewage of the portion ofCambridge through which it is built. The Legislature also authorized the issue, at the request of theBoard, of bonds to an amount not exceeding $250,000, in additionto the amounts hitherto authorized, on account of old claims fordamages and liabilities incurred for past construction on the NorthMetropolitan System. Considerable progress was made in the settlement of old suitswhich had been pending several years. The cost of the North Metropolitan System of sewerage up to thepresent date has been $5,901,914.09. (2) South Metropolitan System. No additions to the area of the South Metropolitan System weremade during the past year. The system provides for the sewageof a portion of the Charles River valley which lies south of the

The area of the South Metropolitan District comprises, as lastyear, 102.55 square miles, having now 37.07 miles of sewers and acontributive population of 140,501.
