Text Appearing Before Image:
ned, considered advisable, for the purposeof estimating the stand of timber, to divide the township into six compart-ments. Map III shows the boundaries of these compartments by brokenlines. Compartment No. I contains all the northeast quarter of the townshipnaturally tributary to Forked Lake or Brandreth Lake Outlet, except thatportion which, although naturally tributary to Brandreth Lake Outlet, hasbeen included in Compartment No. V. This exception has been madebecause the log haul would be materially shortened by leaving the brookat the point indicated as available short haul on Map III, and goingsouth across the marsh to strike the small brook running into Stillman Bayon Raquette Lake. The cost of hauling logs, for that portion of the tract, would in this way be greatly diminished. Compartment No. I is an import-ant one, for the reason that its timber cannot be lumbered into RaquetteLake cheaply, but must go into Forked Lake, and thence north by way ofthe Raquette River. PLATE VII.
