It has been demonstrated that by spraying trees, by usingsuitable emulsions and insecticides, and by gathering the cocoons, the destructivework of insects can, for the most part, be prevented or, at least, controlled. But thework must be done in time each season, and prosecuted vigorously. The StateEntomologist is ready at all times to furnish information and advice to all who needhis assistance. With proper care and attention the trees can be protected ; but, if thiscare and attention will not be given, the selection of the tree is of little importance. Undesirable species.—Some trees were omitted, not so much on account of doubtfulqualities as because the list already offers ample opportunity for selection from thelarge number named. There are, doubtless, several other species, which might beplanted with satisfactory results; but many of them have defects which should beconsidered carefully before making a selection.

The Canoe Birch does the same; and if the lower branches werecut off the pyramidal form of the tree would be destroyed and its beauty greatlyimpaired. The Kentucky Coffee Tree is so unsightly in winter, resembling then adead tree, that it is better omitted in street planting, especially as it will thrive only ingood, moist ground. The European Ash lasts but a few years in our climate, and isin no way superior to our American White Ash. The Sour Gum, or Pepperidge, isa beautiful tree in autumn, but it is too apt to fail in transplanting. The MountainAsh and Flowering Dogwood are beautiful, but the bright red berries of the one andattractive flowers of the other invite injury; their proper place, if on a street or road,is inside the fence and in some door yard.
