While the others are completing theirdress, the leader of the dances, whose place is always midway of theline, and his fellow sit by the bench of cactus and eject the mixture ofsquash blossoms and seeds over each piece, and rub the cac-tus one wayrepeatedly with long Huffy eagle plumes, afterward sprinkling bits ofhawk down over it. When the cactus is all prepared the pekwln ofthe fraternity goes to the bench, and the leader of the dances takes apiece of cactus in each hand and places them in the hands of thepekwin. He gives two pieces of cactus to another officer and hisalternate gives two pieces to each warrior, the officers also carryingwillows. Each of the other members carries a bunch of willows,while the director, who precedes the fraternity, bears the ponepoy-anne (see plate cxxix), they all go to the plaza through the eastern <i See p. 598, note a.

They pass aroundby the east side to the north, and after they dance around twicethey stand in an ellipse and dance for a time. Then while they stepvery slowly a warrior runs to the West. The other warrior (elderbrother Bow priest), following him, strikes him over the left shoulder.The director runs to the South and the deputy follows him, bittinghim over the left shoulder. Then the elder brother How priest runsto the East, the other warrior following and striking him over theleft shoulder. The deputy then runs in a circle indicating the Zenithand the director strikes him on the left shoulder, and the warrior runsin a circle indicating the Nadir and the elder brother Bow prieststrikes him on the left shoulder. They then join the dancer-. There are four dances in the plaza after the sunrise dance; at theclose of each dance the fraternity retire to their ceremonial cham-ber.
