The sticks provided with a crook have attached to them a stringwith a breast feather of an eagle, stained red. The straight sticks,called arrows, have more complicated apj)endages, for to their upperends are attached a packet of meal, a feather, and a dried corn leaf.The l)undles of feathers represented in the plate as fastened to theends of these sticks are those which the priests wear on their headsduring the public dances. For the same reason there are placed on the altar the severalrattles seen on the right-hand corner, as well as the netted water gourdswhich appear here only on tlie last two da\-s of the Snake ceremony,in the public dances of which they are used. Two objects to the rightof the tiponi, on the rear margin of tiie sand mosaic, have been addedto the altar fetishes since the celebration of 1891. They occupied theposition named during the 1893, 1895, and 1897 celebrations. One ofthese is the cephalothorax of a king crab (LhiiKhif: jHiJi/jihiiiifin). \\wother a fragment of water-worn wood. Both of these were gifts fromthe author to ^\iki. tiie Antelope chief, in 1893.
