at the Cedar lake nickel deposit. WINDY LAKE^ Windy lake is in the Sudbury nickel area, in that part of the field known asthe northern nickel range. The lake is about 24 miles by rail west of the town ofSudbury and the main double-track line of the Canadian Pacific railway passeslalong the northeastern shore. The mining rights to the land under Windy lake arestill owned by the province of Ontario. It has been a common assumption for many years among prospectors, miningmen and geologists that a deposit of nickel ore might occur under the lake. Thisrfissumption is based mainly on the fact that the contact lietween a rock callednorite and the granite-gneiss crosses the lake and is hidden l)elow its waters. 196 Department of Mines No. 4 contact, and hence the assumption that a valiiahle ore body of nickel may existunder the lake. The Levack nickel mine, with its immense ore reserves of4,500,000 tons,^ lies four miles to the northeast of the lake. Furthermore, Windyhike occupies a marked depression in the rocks, the depth of the water being inplaces 175 feet along the approximate line of contact between the norite and thegranite-gneiss. This depression is suggestive of a deposit of nickel ore. since it isknown that the sulphide ore weathers readily, and would give the glaciers an oppor-tunity to gouge out the soft, weathered ore and thus form a valley or otherdepression. The country surrounding Windy lake, which has an elevation of 1,107 feetabove the sea, is rugged, particularly on the south side of the lake.
