s midges, not to mention Europeanspecies, which may become established in this country at almostany time and cause serious losses in somewhat the same way asdid the Hessian fly in earlier years. Our knowledge of American gall midges was in a very unsatis-factory condition in 1895. The following discussion of the Les-tremiinae and Heteropezinae comprises a systematic descriptiveaccount of these groups. LESTREMIINAEThe members of this subfamily are almost invariably medium tosmall, dark brown or black species, easily distinguished from allother Itonididae by the five tarsal segments, the metatarsus beinglonger than the following segment, and the presence of the fourthlong vein, which latter may be either forked as in Lestremiaor simple and obsolescent as in Campylomyza. The antennaemay be moderate as in Lestremia and Campylomyza or extremelyshort as in Tritozyga and Microcerata. The circumfili, socharacteristic of the higher groups, are entirely wanting in this 128 NEW YORK STATE MUSEUM

The members of this group appear to depend to a con-siderable extent upon the olfactory organs. Many of the speciesfalling in this division subsist in the larval stage on dead or decay-ing vegetable matter. This group is a connecting link with the Mycetophilidae fromwhich it is most easily distinguished by the absence of tibial spursand the moderate development of the coxae. Lestremiinariae The members of this tribe are separable from all other Itonid-idae by the forked fourth vein and by the generalized characterof the antennae. These organs may be moderately well developedas in Lestremia and Catocha, or greatly reduced as in Tritozygaand Microcerata.
