to the west into the hill. To the north, along the south road from Moores Mill to Pleasant Valley, thered slates come up on the western limb of this syncline and aboutthree-fourths of a mile farther northwest they appear again appar-ently on the western limb of the succeeding anticline. There was a tendency to form irregular folds. This is shown ona small scale in plate 18, in which we have a small overturned andcompressed syncline on the right of the picture, followed by anirregular anticline, which becomes compressed and pushed up atthe west, and then another compressed syncline not distinct in thephotograph but similar to the first. In this instance, it is seen thatthe production of anticline and syncline in the middle part of theledge has been incomplete. With similar tendencies prevailing inthe larger folds, it is easy to see how, along the western portion ofthe irregular anticline, there would have been a tendency to over-thrust. Crumpling is not uncommon. The wrinkles vary from

Cleavage is so prominent in surface outcrops that the stratifica-tion dip is usually obscured. The prevailing eastward dip indicatesa common eastward inclination for the cleavage. The presumptionis that stratification and cleavage often coincide or approximate eachother very closely. Where the cleavage is not dominant to theexclusion of the stratification, this fact is often observed. Jointing is well displayed in Matteawan along the Newburgh,Dutchess and Connecticut track. A prominent set of joints shownhere has a general strike of 11. 200 e. and a dip of 8o° w. Some of the faults within the slates have been alluded to indescribing the limestone patches within this formation. Extending in a northwest direction approximately parallel witltthe road from Brush to Arthursburg, as shown on the map, is aclear transverse fault. This break is best seen from t
