loss of the lime constituent. This rockcould be equally well designated as a calcareous quartzite. It isvery similar to the rock overlying, or interbedded with, the con-glomerate near Ivys house farther east, but perhaps is a little moresilicious. It carries the same rusty grains. The writer was inter-ested to compare this rock with specimens collected from the Sproutbrook limestone near Peekskill and was surprised to note the strongresemblance in texture, mineralogy and markings. This patch lies back from the road, about 500 or 600 yards eastof J. Fleets house. It forms a distinct scarp which continues southin the slates along the road after the latter makes its southwardturn just east of Fleets house. A thick band of the red slatescomes in between this scarp and Fleets house and is crosseddiagonally by the road. The conglomerate rests by overthrust onthe slates at the west. This feature is shown at Fox Hole, alocal name for the precipitous scarp shown in plate 16 andfigure 26. (V s

A, limestone conglomerate; B, silieious limestone; C, slate; F, fault When seen from above the conglomerate is coarse, but whenexamined along the edges of the eastwardly dipping beds thepebbles are seen to be squeezed out into stringers, so that theapparent coarseness can not represent the original condition. Thedip is about 200 e. and the strike about n. io° e. The calcareousquartzite was not seen in actual contact with the conglomerate, butis undoubtedly conformable. At the east the former is followedby the slates. Solenopora com pacta, showing the char-acteristic very fine lines, was noted in the conglomerate. Thequartzitic rock outcrops at intervals to the south for one-fourth toone-third of a mile, but gradually dies away. At the north theseries ends more abruptly. The conglomerate at the last mentioned locality of those whichhave just been described is undoubtedly the equivalent
