Forest, Fish and Game Commission 121 greater part of all this region has been lumbered. Some of it isbeing lumbered at the present time for the third cutting. They aregathering the material that at previous cuttings was not of sufficientvalue to pay for exploiting. Whatever is left after the presentoperation will be of very little value for any purpose. Much of thisregion has been burned and some of it has been burned again andagain. The original type has disappeared, not even seed trees beingleft to reseed the ground. Lands that have been burned as thor-oughly as these have been are usually seeded by some species likethe poplar that on account of the lightness of its seeds scatters onthe winds to great distances. This is true in this case and we findmuch of these lands covered with the poplar type.
