found near the shore ofOneida lake. The elevation is about 400 feet. There is a belt of lowcountry extending east and west across the entire county. This isnarrow in the east where it contains the valley of the Mohawk andbroadens out toward the west like a fan until it includes all of thelowland adjacent to Oneida lake. At no point does it reach morethan about 450 feet elevation. From this low lying belt, it risesmore or less abruptly, both toward the north and toward the south,until it reaches the highest point in the county, 1944 feet in thesoutheastern part of the town of Marshall. The highest point northof the low lying belt is found in the town of Steuben, where itreaches an elevation of 1780 feet. The county, outside of the lowbelt, is made up of narrow valleys separated by broad ranges ofhills. The valleys contain the streams and drainage systems. Thehills rise abruptly from the narrow valleys and form broad rollingtablelands several hundred feet above the intervening valleys.
