Much of it is covered with poplar anda poor quality of hardwood growth that will never amount to much.There are large areas that have little growth of any kind and theseshould be planted with pines. The seed trees are so scarce through-out this region that it would take several generations of self seedingbefore a stand of sufficient density to make desirable timber wouldbe obtained. Such a stand can be obtained at once by planting. Re-foresting is the only way to give such lands premanent value andthe quicker this is done the better for all. OWNERSHIP AND VALUESThe majority of the residents on the farms of the county arethe owners of the land. There are, however, a great many tenants.This is especially true in the hill region where much of the land isheld by nonresidents, the descendents of the early settlers. Thepopulation is cosmopolitan in its character. There are a goodly

VALUE AND TAX RATES The prices of farm property vary according to location and im-provements. Good farm land will bring as high as $100.00 peracre, while cut over lands that have no value for agriculture areassessed as low as $1 per acre. Many of the rough hill farms areassessed below $10 per acre. The assessed valuation is probablyabout two-thirds of the real value, although in many cases it wouldbe hard to make a quick sale at the assessed valuation. The tax rate varies greatly in the different towns. It is as lowas $3-7i per thousand in some towns and as high as $25.67 in others. THE LUMBER INDUSTRY The lumber industry in Oneida county is at rather a low ebbbecause of the scarcity of timber.
