vision Chief Dorlondiscovered a quantity of game which had not been bonded, in the Harrisonstreet Freezer in New York city. This game included 5,734 birds whichhad been billed as broilers, lamb fries, etc., and consigned to thestorage company by men acting as dummies for several of the large NewYork dealers in game. This case, which involves penalties of thousands ofdollars, will be tried out in the courts during the winter. The Piseco region in Hamilton county has been one of the unregeneratesections of the State as regards game law violation. Two years ago, whilejacking deer in defiance of the law, Hobart Caslor and John Burton saw thereflection from an extinguished jacklight in a boat operated by WilliamCourtney, which they mistook for the reflection from a deers eyes. Oneof the men fired a shot, which resulted in the wounding of Courtney. Pro-tector Frank Stanyon took up the matter, with the result that Caslor andBurton were both convicted of jacking and fined. No action was taken

A year ago ProtectorSpeenburgh, after an all-night trip through the woods, nailed Courtney atSpruce Lake while hounding deer in violation of the law, and Courtney wasfined $90. Since then, through the efforts of Protector Stanyon and others,Courtney has been convicted of different violations of the game law, andjudgment was taken against him for more than $400. At present he isserving a six months sentence in jail. A Shooting Affray It is not uncommon for protectors to be shot at while in the pursuitof their duties. There are few protectors who have served any length oftime on the force who have not had an experience of this kind. As a generalthing, however, there is little danger from this source.
