on green brook trout eggs from Weissport, Pa., gave us over seventy-five per cent good eggs. The water from flowing wells, cold and free fromdirt, has proved itself of excellent quality as we had no loss from disease ofany kind among our trout this past year. The over supply of oxygen,which all artesian well water contains in this region, was disposed of byrunning it the length of building before entering the supply trough. Wefailed in the collection of torn cod eggs. Before the spawning season therewere plenty of fish, good catches being made by hand line fishermen; butin December they all disappeared. In the Great South Bay, where we getmost of the spawn, not a fish could be caught. Later it was reported theywere being washed ashore by the surf on Rockaway Beach. We tookup hatching winter flat fish, the spawn collected from fish caught in Gardi-ners Bav by the fyke-net fishermen. This is a very important food fish onthe New York market. Large catches of these fishwere reported along the Sound, which shows good results from this branchof work. Owing to the old pump being out of order, the lobster hatchingwas transferred to Fort Pond Bay, near Montauk, Long Island. Throughthe courtesy of Capt. E. B. Tuthill, a large dealer at Montauk, we wereallowed privileges that enabled us to carry on this work and with his aidwe secured a good lot of eggs. The hatching was done in the old SethGreen shad boxes used on Hudson river years ago and discarded for modernappliances.
