outcrop, the ligniteis apparently more adhesive, and can bekept for weeks (22) without falling topieces. It breaks with a conchoidalfracture, the fresh surface showing thecompact texture and rather brilliantlustre of jet. The analysis of lignitefrom the Big rapid shows it to be ofgood quality. It is unfortunate that itshould occur in such small quantity. Peaty lignite occurs in the interglacialbeds already mentioned as overlying thegypsum of the Moose river. The qual-ity is fair, but in quantity these aremere pockets. On the Opazatika Several seams of impure lignite oc-cur on the lower Opazatika River, themost important being at two and a halfmiles, at three miles, and at three milesand three-quarters above the mouth. The lowest outcrop shows two small «seams in a bank of stratified clay andboulder clay about twenty feet in (21) Soe Borrons Report on the MooseRiver Basin, 1890, p. 63. The seam is only a fewinches thick, and is overlaid and under-laid by blue clay. The upper seam isan exceedingly compact argillaceousbrown lignite, also narrow and unim-portant. The second bed on the western sideof the river shows lignite of ratherbetter quality than the first. It iscomposed chiefly of moss and rushes, not much carbonized, which break offin long strips sixteen inches long. Theseam is some nine inches thick, and istraceable for 225 feet along the bank, and reappears again about one hundredyards still farther up stream. The third outcrop shows a lignite bedabout twelve inches thick, of ratherpoor quality, underlaid by blue clay andoverlain by rusty clay and sand. Theseam extends along the bank for about300 feet. All the lignite beds on theOpazatika and Missanabie lie practicallyhorizontally, the small departures f
