p and capable of indefinite extension, and, comparing our resultswith those obtained in other countries, we feel that we are on the righttrack and are sanguine of greater success in the future. There are manyevidences, from the increased number of small lobsters found in our bay, thatthe influence of the lobster hatching work is already beginning to be felt. We have, also, during the past summer, planted many millions of smallclams, grading from one-eighth to one-half an inch in length. Our previousexperiments have demonstrated that, without question, clam culture isquite as feasible and practical as oyster culture. In addition to these two lines of work, we have begun investigations ofthe fauna and flora of Narragansett Bay, of the life history of certain otherfood animals, of the new methods of hatching tautog and catfish, and havecarried on some statistical work in regard to fish-traps and their catches. Bowers. Commissioner, for his ready responses to our variousrequests. In this connection it may be said that in addition to the fishplanted in New York State waters by our Commission the United StatesCommissioner has distributed: 1, 148, 000 brook trout fry, 3 ,375 brook trout yearlings,4. 470, 000 lake trout fry,10,900 rainbow trout fry,1, 850 black bass yearlings,350 rock bass yearlings,100,000 pike-perch fry,15,235.000 whitefish fry. In addition to its regular labors during the year, the Commission alsohad prepared an extensive exhibit of the food and game fishes of the State,both fresh and salt water, for the St. Louis exhibition.
