FOREST, FISH AND GAME COMMISSION. 27 dacks is generally found in connection with this famous tree. But, as white pineseedlings sufficient to cover the entire area could not be obtained at a satisfactoryprice, other species would have to be used. Preference was accordingly given tospruce as the next best; and, as none of the nurseries in this country or abroadhad done anything in the way of propagating our native spruce, recourse was hadto the Norway Spruce, a species which has been grown successfully in Europeanforests as a timber tree, and has also been raised extensively in Americannurseries for park or lawn purposes. The Axton nurseries, operated by the State College of Forestry, having offereda stock of seedlings at a low price, an order was given at the following rates: 50,000 White Pine transplants, 4 years old, at $6.2510,000 White Pine seedlings, 2 years old, at $5 .40,000 Scotch Pine transplants, 3 years old, at $4 .10,000 Scotch Pine seedlings, 2 years old, at $3 .50,000 Nor
