About $400 were expended this summer, on which, with muchdifficulty, we succeeded in collecting, by paying for the service, 10 percent., $88.75. ORIGINAL TENT LIFE. say that the department has not been called into service by conflagrationsupon our own grounds during the year. An organization of exempt fire-men has been perfected in our district, under the state law, by which 28 OCEAN GROVE, N. J. effective firemen having served seven successive years, are exempt fromduty, at their pleasure, and yet have continued unto them, as when infull service, exemption from military, as well as jury duty, and the remittalof $5.00, on annual taxation, and entitled to benefits from sickness arriv-ing from fire duty, together with funeral expenses. The whole departmentis in constant readiness, and always prompt to respond to the slightestalarm. Police. Mr. Frank Tantum, by day, and two night men are on duty all theyear, with Gen. J. C. Patteson, as chief. The record shows for the season, 455 days of extra policing duringthe months of July, August, and part of September, against 525 for thesame months, last year.
