Our police force proveditself an arm of strength during the year past. Under the careful supervision of our Police Committee good servicehas been rendered, and the general appearance of all the men employedimproved by being in regular police uniform. Each man kept a record of his work, reporting to the Chief, GeneralJohn C. Patterson, twice each day. A record is kept by the Chief, whoreports to the Police Committee through its Secretary, T. M. Dickey,Esq., once a week, or oftener, if need be. There have been 30 arrests for different violations of order: Disorderly conduct, 7; intoxicated, 4; huckster without license, 1;peddler, 1 ; Sabbath bathers, 2 ; bicyclers, 10 ; tramps, 2 ; persons in im-proper bathing suits, 2.

Persons not properly covered stopped from going though the streetsto and from bathing grounds, 48. Shows prevented from entering grounds, 7. Bicyclers stopped from riding on the Sabbath day (strangers to ourregulations), 128. Lost children restored to their parents, 27. Cases arbitrated, 8. Dogs running without muzzles, killed, 19. There was only one pickpocket reported during the summer, andthat one we were fortunate to arrest while in the act. It was a coloredwoman who had plied her calling during the season at the depot and allalong the beach. She was brought before the Chief of Police, who heldher for the Grand Jury, sending her to the county jail, and meanwhileobtaining her record, which was bad, and on Tuesday, October 6th, shewas sentenced by Judge Conover to four years in States prison.
