—Double term. In reading and speakingthere is a triple aim—to train speakers to appeal to the understanding, theemotions and the will of the audience. During the term, literature isstudied, read, or recited, to illustrate literary analysis, sequence of thought,clearness of enunciation, form of emphasis, word pictures, atmosphere,tone-color, rhythm, movement, and personation. During the term, drill isgiven in the formation of elementary sounds. Vocal culture includes the technique of the speaking voice, withexercises for placing tone, support oi tone, smoothness, flexibility, volume,force, and tone-color; breathing exercises; the anatomy and physiology ofthe respiratory and vocal organs, and the hygiene of the voice. Gesture includes relaxing exercises, poising exercises, principles ofgesture, exercises for the application of these principles, and original gesturework. Recitals for criticism are given every five weeks. The grades givenfor these declamations count as rhetoricals II.
