A highly ornHmental and handsome genus of plants, easj' of culture; has a good effect in shrubbery and borders. Hardy perennial Per pkt. Lychnis, alba, white, 2 ft 05 — Chalcedoiiica, scarlet, 2ft 05 MADIA (Madaria). Nat. Ord. Cojiposit^. A family of showy hardy annuals; the flowers golden, with a brownish rim round the disc. Sow in good soil in May. Hardy annual. Madia Elegaiis (Elegant Madia), from California, yellow, 2 ft 05 MAliOPE. Nat. Ord. Malvace^. (See ilhistraiion on page 17.) Handsome plants of a branching habit, producing large flowers in great profusion ; succeed in any good soil. Hardy annnai. Malope grandiflora, dark crimson, 2 ft 05 — trifida alba, white, 2 ft. 05 MARVEL OF PERTJ^tFour o'clock), (Mirabilis). Nat. Ord. Ntctaginace^. {See illustration on page 17.) A beautiful plant from Mexico, with flowers of much beauty and a variety of colors and handsome foliage; makes a fine summer hedge. The roots can be preserved, like Dahlias, through the winter. Half-hardy iierennial. Marvel of Pemi (Four o'clock), mixed colors, 2 ft 05 — —gold striped and variegated foliage, 2 ft 10 MARIGOLD (Tagetes). Nat. Ord. Composite. A well-known, magnificent plant, with handsome double fiowers of rich and beautiful colors and neat, compact, green foliage, producing a splendid eff"ect in almost any situation. The African is the tallest and most striking in large beds and shrubbery borders, while the French fills in in front or is used for small beds. Half-hardy annual. Marigold, Afi'icaii lemon, double, 2ft 05 orange, double. 2 ft. 05 — French, brown, double, IX ^ 05 — ranunculus, striped, double, 1>^ It 05 — pot (Calendula), mixed, 1 ft 05 MARTYNIA. Nat. Ord. Bisnoniace^. {See illmtration on page 19.) Free flowering plants of coarse foliage, easilj' transplanted. The young seed-pods are very desirable for pickUug. Tender annual. Martynia lutea, yellow. 2 ft 05 — proboscidea, light blue 05 MATRICARIA (Feverfew). Nat. Ord. Composite. A beautiful dwarf-growing plant, well adapted for beds or edgings. Half-hardy annual. Matricaria eximina crispa fl. pi., beautiful curled foliage, 8 in 20 *MAURANDYA. Nat. Ord. Scrophulariace^. A beautiful summer climber particularly adapted to the conservatory and green-house, or handsome for trellises, verandas, &c. Bloorns the first season from seed. Half-hardy perennial. Maurandya Barclayana. rich violet. 10 ft 10 — alba, white, 10 ft 10 — rosea, rosy pink, 10 It. 10 — mixed, fine varieties 10 MESEMBRYANTHEMUM, see Ice plant. MIGNONETTE (Reseda). Nat. Ord. Eesedace^.. A well-known fragrant plant. The seed should be sown about shrubbery and mixed borders, where it grows rapidly ; it is more fragrant when grown on poor soil; if thinned out as soon as the plants are large enough they will grow stronger, and produce larger spikes of bloom. Hardy annual. Mignonette, sweet (Reseda Odorata), white and buft", 6 in 05 — large flowering (K. Grandiflora), buft", 6 in -. 05 — Parson's new white flowering, a distinct new variety ; flowers almost white, very fragrant. Ions spikes.. 10 — Miles' new hybrid spiral (novelty of '78), habit dwarf and branching spikes growing from iS to 14 in., very fragrant 20 — Victoria grandiflora, dark red, 6 in. ,20 — Golden Queen.
