Framingham Mass.,
Jan. 8 1888
Dear Miss Longfellow,
Gladly received your very nice card and many thanks for it. I meant to have written long before now, to thank you for the pretty handkerchiefs and valuable book which you sent Christmas, and please accept my thanks for them now.
We had as a pleasant time Christmas as we could expect for the sad accident and excite [p. 2] ment which we had to go through Saturday afternoon, the day before Christmas. One of the boarding halls got caught on fire, by the explosion of the gas in cellar, which burnt all the rooms on the third floor and a few on the second story; the first story and the foundation remained in good condition. Most of the young ladies saved all their clothing, and I believe only two of them lost all they had. and no lives were lost.
An account of the fire the school will [p. 3] close one week earlier than was intended and that will be a week from next Wednesday, the 18th and we are to have three weeks vacation.
With gratitude for your kindness and a very Happy New Year to you.
I remain,
Annie R. Dawson
