State Normal School,
Framingham, Mass.
Oct. 23, 1887.
Dear friend,
I was very pleasantly surprised the other day on receiving a letter from Miss Folsom to learn that you had very kindly offered to help toward getting my education and sincerely hope you will accept all my thanks for your great kindness to me. While in Jamaica Plain, with Miss Gilman [p.2 ] a sister to Mr. F.N. Gilman the Hampton treasurer, Walter Battice wanted to go and see you as you had so kindly helped him while in school at Hampton and as Miss Gilman wanted to do some errands in Cambridge, she and I went with him, but he did not find you at home although we were all glad of the opportunity to see the home of one of our grandest and noblest poets of our country and whose works we all have enjoyed to read and whose works will ever last [p. 3] and read with pleasure.
And once more I want to thank you for your kindness, that I may get better prepared for the work which lies near at hand for me to do and may God grant me success to accomplish the work which I have so long wanted to do and which [crossed out: is] our ^people is in the most need of, teachers and helpers of their own race.
With much thanks and, a grateful heart to you I remain,
Annie R. Dawson.
