Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The educational wing on the east side of the Prayer Tower Cathedral Church of God in Christ on Kensington Avenue in Buffalo, New York, as seen in November 2022. According to a May 1950 announcement by the leadership of what was then known as Trinity Evangelical & Reformed Church, this flat-roofed annex contained an assembly hall, Sunday school classrooms, community activity space, and a pastor's study, and was originally intended as just the first of a two-part, $150K (later revised upward to $240K) expansion program that originally also included a never-realized extension to the rear of the sanctuary that would have increased its seating capacity from 270 to 350. Ground was broken in June 1952 and construction concluded the following year. The architecturally-minded will note that the design by the local firm of Shelgren & Whitman combines functional, minimalist Modernism with a more ornate Gothic-styled entrance (note in particular the engravings on the stone surround, including shields and foliate reliefs, as well as the stained glass in the tympanum of the pointed arch and the cast iron sconces on either side), which serves as an effective transition vis-à-vis Charles W. Bolton's 1923 sanctuary to the right.
